Kifah Adra had stitched since girlhood. In 2003 she began teaching others in Masafer Yatta, in a single room, so the women of the South Hebron Hills could hold an income of their own. The first panels were sold quietly, through women's networks. The cooperative she leads carries that work into the present.
THE DIRECTOR
Kifah Adra learned tatreez as a girl and founded the cooperative in 2003. She directs it still, reading each panel by its village, holding the standard every maker works to, and choosing which patterns are carried forward.
Resolute RGL is majority Palestinian-owned, the women who make the craft are the majority shareholders, decision makers and owners. Each shoe sold directly profits the women's weaving cooperative in Masafer Yatta and provides long term sustainable economic development to the community.
Tatreez has been stitched across these hills for thousands of years, each region holding its own patterns. The Women's Weaving Cooperative carries that story through time and into the present.
Around two hundred and fifty women work across Masafer Yatta and the Hebron region, depending on the season. The cooperative is led by Kifah Adra.
In 1965, Sameeha Khalil founded Inash al-Usra in al-Bireh, the first cooperative to pay refugee women for their embroidery and to catalogue the patterns. The Women's Weaving Cooperative carries that work into the present, in a different village and a different generation.
